Prototype Era
Era 8 (1983 to 1994) British Rail Sectorisation
As the first member of class (originally to be designated Class 87/2 as the locomotives were seen as an upgraded version of the existing Class 87s), 90001 initially went to the Rail Technical Centre at Derby for testing in October 1987.
It entered service at Willesden depot in October 1987 and, in 1989, was named ‘BBC Midlands Today’. That name was removed in 2004 and, ten years later, it was given the name ‘Crown Point’ while based at Norwich with Abellio Greater Anglia.
In April 2020, it was bought by Locomotive Services Limited, Crewe for main line excursion work. They repainted it in its original InterCity ‘Swallow’ livery and renamed it ‘Royal Scot’. It is one of three Class 90s currently owned by LSL, the others being 90002 and 90026.
This RailRoad model brings the locomotive to life in OO scale form, but with more durable features than found on our main range. It is also pre-fitted with a DCC sound chip, for the most authentic model railway experience.

* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Hornby RailRoad BR Intercity Class 90 ‘Royal Scot’ 90001 (DCC Sound Fitted) is an OO‑scale model of the British Rail Class 90 locomotive, number 90001. The model carries the manufacturer part number R30529TXS and represents the British Rail sectorisation era.
The prototype locomotive was the first of its class, originally intended to be designated Class 87/2. It was delivered to the Rail Technical Centre at Derby for testing in October 1987 and entered service at Willesden depot later that month. In 1989 it was named “BBC Midlands Today”, a name withdrawn in 2004; in 2014 it received the name “Crown Point” while based at Norwich with Abellio Greater Anglia. In April 2020 the locomotive was acquired by Locomotive Services Limited, Crewe, repainted in its original InterCity ‘Swallow’ livery and renamed “Royal Scot”. LSL now owns three Class 90s, numbers 90001, 90002 and 90026.
The Hornby RailRoad version is built with more durable components than those used in the main Hornby range. It comes pre‑fitted with a DCC sound chip, providing digital control and realistic sound effects for model railway operation.
