Prototype Era
Era 8 (1983 to 1994) British Rail Sectorisation
As the first member of class (originally to be designated Class 87/2 as the locomotives were seen as an upgraded version of the existing Class 87s), 90001 initially went to the Rail Technical Centre at Derby for testing in October 1987.
It entered service at Willesden depot in October 1987 and, in 1989, was named ‘BBC Midlands Today’. That name was removed in 2004 and, ten years later, it was given the name ‘Crown Point’ while based at Norwich with Abellio Greater Anglia. In April 2020, it was bought by Locomotive Services Limited, Crewe for main line excursion work. They repainted it in the original InterCity ‘Swallow’ livery and renamed it ‘Royal Scot’. It is one of three Class 90s currently owned by LSL, the others being 90002 and 90026.
This RailRoad locomotive model is a faithful representation of the electric engine, but with more durable features that make it perfect for regular model railway running.

Hornby RailRoad model of the British Rail Intercity Class 90 locomotive, number 90001, is supplied with the manufacturer part number R30529. The model represents the period of British Rail sectorisation.
The real locomotive was the first of its class, originally intended to be designated Class 87/2. It underwent testing at the Rail Technical Centre in Derby in October 1987 and entered service at Willesden depot the same month. In 1989 the engine was named BBC Midlands Today; the name was removed in 2004 and it was later renamed Crown Point in 2014 while based at Norwich with Abellio Greater Anglia. In April 2020 the locomotive was purchased by Locomotive Services Limited at Crewe for main line excursion work, repainted in the original InterCity Swallow livery and given the name Royal Scot. It is one of three Class 90s owned by LSL, the others being 90002 and 90026.
The Hornby RailRoad model is a faithful representation of the electric engine, incorporating more durable components to withstand regular model railway operation.
