Manufacturer description

British Rail Class 128 was a class of diesel multiple unit, built for British Rail and introduced in 1959.

The class was built specifically for parcels, fitted out with parcel racks and bike storage at each end, and did not feature any passenger accommodation. The last members of the class were withdrawn in 1990 and broken up the following year, and none were preserved.

Heljan Class 128 DPU ‘Parcel Service’ (model number M55990) is a OO‑scale model of the British Rail Class 128 diesel multiple unit. The locomotive is finished in a pristine BR blue livery with small yellow end panels and carries the British Rail late crest. It measures 267 mm in length, has a Bo‑Bo wheel arrangement and rides on all‑wheel power pickup. The model is DCC ready, requiring a 21‑pin decoder, and features NEM couplings, sprung buffers and directional lighting. It can negotiate a minimum 2nd‑radius curve of 438 mm.

The prototype was built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company between 1959 and 1960, with a total production run of ten units. Designed solely for parcels, the Class 128 carried parcel racks and bicycle storage rather than passenger accommodation, and was capable of a maximum speed of 70 mph. The final units were withdrawn in 1990 and were all scrapped the following year, with none preserved.
