These German-built railbuses were delivered in April 1958 and initially operated on the Maldon, Braintree, and Saffron Walden lines. The last working example was withdrawn from service in August 1967 and four survived into preservation. This model is an improvement on the previous version first produced by Heljan in 2012.

This model, E79961, is a representation of a Waggon & Maschinenbau (W&M) Diesel Railbus in British Railways' green livery with a small yellow panel. It is a DCC Ready model, equipped with a 21-pin socket, and features all-wheel drive, a heavy-duty chassis, and working interior lights. The model is based on a 0-6-0 wheel arrangement and has a minimum radius curve of 1. It is built by Heljan and is an improved version of a model first produced in 2012.

The real-life W&M railbuses were built by Waggon-und-Maschinenbau GmbH Donauwörth in 1958 and delivered to British Railways in April of that year. They initially operated on the Maldon, Braintree, and Saffron Walden lines before being withdrawn from service in August 1967. Four examples have survived into preservation.

The model is a representation of the railbus during the British Railways Late Crest period. It features NEM couplings and sprung buffers, making it suitable for operation on standard model railway layouts.
