Prototype Era
Era 4 (1948 to 1956) British Railways Early Crest
The GWR pioneered the use of diesel railcars for passenger traffic in the 1930s. The most numerous variant was the batch built in 1940-42 with its distinctive angular ‘razor edge’ bodywork. Employed on branch lines and local services, they were the perfect single vehicle passenger train and continued to provide sterling service until replaced by BR DMUs in the early-1960s. This model features separately switchable headlamps, tail lights, saloon and cab lights and a fully detailed interior.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Heljan AEC Parcels Railcar 34 BR Express Parcels Crimson is a 200 mm (OO gauge) model of the AEC diesel railcar that operated on the Great Western Railway and later the British Railways Western Region. The kit is supplied in the British Rail crimson livery and carries the manufacturer part number 19431. It features all‑wheel power pickup, NEM / tension lock couplings, a minimum curve radius of 2, and separately switchable head‑lamps, tail lights, saloon and cab lights, together with a fully detailed interior.
The prototype railcar was built by AEC and the GWR Swindon Works between 1940 and 1942, with a total production of fourteen plus one unit. It served on local and branch line passenger and parcels services, representing the British Railways early crest period. The model depicts the distinctive angular “razor edge” bodywork that characterised the most numerous batch of these single‑vehicle passenger trains, which remained in service until they were superseded by BR DMUs in the early 1960s.
