Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)
The GWR pioneered the use of diesel railcars for passenger traffic in the 1930s, and their numbers gradually increased with batches from different manufacturers. However, the most numerous variant was the batch built in 1940-42 with its distinctive angular 'razor edge' bodywork. Employed on branch lines and local services, they were the perfect single vehicle passenger train and continued to provide sterling service until replaced by BR DMUs in the early-1960s.

This OO gauge model, produced by Heljan, represents a Great Western Railway AEC Diesel Railcar in the iconic chocolate and cream livery. The model features a 21-pin DCC socket, allowing for easy digital command control upgrade. It has a pristine finish, with working lights and interior lighting, and is equipped with NEM couplings and sprung buffers.
The model is built to represent a specific class of locomotive, the Great Western Railway AEC Railcar, which was introduced in the 1930s. This class of locomotive was pioneering in the use of diesel railcars for passenger traffic and was employed on local services and branch lines.
The model is built to a scale of 1:76 and has a length of 250mm. It has a minimum radius curve requirement of 2nd Radius (438mm) and features all-wheel power pickup. The model is designed to represent a specific batch of locomotives built by AEC and GWR Swindon Works between 1940 and 1942, with a total of 38 units produced.
The specifications of the model match those of the real locomotives, with 14 units built in the 19-33 series, and a service career spanning from 1940 to 1962. The model is designed for use on local passenger services, providing a faithful representation of the original locomotives that operated on the Great Western Railway network during the Big Four period.
