Prototype Era
Era 4 (1948 to 1956) British Railways Early Crest
The GWR pioneered the use of diesel railcars for passenger traffic in the 1930s, and their numbers gradually increased with batches from different manufacturers. However, the most numerous variant was the batch built in 1940-42 with its distinctive angular 'razor edge' bodywork. Employed on branch lines and local services, they were the perfect single vehicle passenger train and continued to provide sterling service until replaced by BR DMUs in the early-1960s.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

The Heljan model of the GWR AEC Railcar W20W is a OO gauge diesel locomotive, representing a British Railways example in crimson and cream livery with a black roof. The model features a 21-pin DCC interface, making it DCC Ready, and includes working lights, NEM couplings and sprung buffers.
The model is based on one of the most numerous variants of the GWR's diesel railcars, built in 1940-42 with angular 'razor edge' bodywork. These vehicles were employed on local passenger services and branch lines, providing a single vehicle passenger train until their replacement by BR DMUs in the early 1960s.
The model measures 250mm in length and has a minimum radius curve requirement of 438mm. It is powered by electric motive power and features all-wheel power pickup. The model is a faithful representation of the period, with a built period of 1934-1942 and a total production run of 38 units.
