Manufacturer description

PROTOTYPE

Salt was one of the most important feed stocks that fed the industrial revolution and vast quantities would have been transported nationally. The principal salt mining area in the UK was Cheshire, but salt was also mined in Lancashire, the Midlands and Yorkshire.

Once processed, the salt had to be kept dry and was transported in bags in high sided wagons with weather proof, usually pitched roofs. Private owner wagons for salt were common and where the salt was for table use, the vans used were often elaborately decorated with the suppliers branding. Salt wagons were in use commonly right up to the 1970s and several are now in preservation.

Dapol Salt Van Saxa 237 Weathered is a OO gauge model of a high‑sided salt wagon dating from the era of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR). The model is supplied in a weathered finish, measures 82 mm long, 33 mm wide and 48 mm high, and carries the Saxa livery. It is built to a minimum radius of curve 1 and is listed under manufacturer part number 4F‑018‑103. The wagons were originally produced by a number of companies and were used to transport processed salt, largely mined in Cheshire, Lancashire, the Midlands and Yorkshire, up until the 1970s.

The prototype wagons featured pitched roofs and weather‑proof side panels, and private owners often embellished them with elaborate branding when the salt was intended for table use. Dapol’s model includes separate hand rails, profiled spoked wheels, a highly detailed body and chassis, as well as NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings, making it a faithful representation for collectors and railway model enthusiasts.
