Manufacturer description

Salt was one of the most important feed stocks that fed the industrial revolution and vast quantities would have been transported nationally. The principal salt mining area in the UK was Cheshire, but salt was also mined in Lancashire, the Midlands and Yorkshire.

Once processed, the salt had to be kept dry and was transported in bags in high sided wagons with weather proof, usually pitched roofs. Private owner wagons for salt were common and where the salt was for table use, the vans used were often elaborately decorated with the suppliers branding. Salt wagons were in use commonly right up to the 1970s and several are now in preservation.

The Dapol Union Salt Salt Van – Weathered is a 1:76 scale model of a high‑sided salt wagon. It measures 82 mm in length, 33 mm in width and 48 mm in height, and is supplied in a weathered finish. The livery is Union Salt and the model carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑018‑006. It is intended to represent the period of the Big Four railway companies – LNER, LMS, GWR and SR – and can navigate a minimum radius curve of 1.

Salt was a vital commodity during the industrial revolution and was transported in specialised wagons across the United Kingdom. The principal mining area was Cheshire, with additional sites in Lancashire, the Midlands and Yorkshire. Processed salt was kept dry in bags and conveyed in wagons with pitched, weather‑proof roofs. Private owner wagons were common, and those used for table salt were often elaborately branded; such wagons remained in regular use until the 1970s and many examples survive in preservation.

The model includes separately added handrails, profiled spoked wheels and a highly detailed body and chassis. It is fitted with NEM pockets and self‑centring couplings for compatibility with other rolling stock. The model is intended as a detailed addition to a collection of railway wagons.
