Manufacturer description

Gunpowder vans were especially constructed vans designed for the safer transport of gunpowder and other potentially explosive substances. In the 1920’s the RCH laid down rules and standards governing the running and construction of these vans and these rules were enforced relatively unchanged until the early 1980’s when gunpowder vans were decommissioned. The vans were often painted in distinguishing colours or with crosses to identify the wagons and the  potential dangers.

•           Profiled wheels

The Dapol Gunpowder Van SR 62151 is a weathered OO gauge model representing a British Railways early‑crest gunpowder van from the 1930s. It is finished in a weathered SR black livery and rides on a four‑wheel arrangement. The model bears the manufacturer part number 4F‑013‑030.

The prototype vans were built by the Railway Clearing House for the GWR, LNER, LMS, Royal Ordnance Factory and British Railways. Their purpose was the safe transport of gunpowder and other potentially explosive substances. From the 1920s the RCH set rules and standards for the construction and operation of these wagons, which remained largely unchanged until they were withdrawn in the early 1980s. Distinctive markings such as specific colours or safety crosses were used to identify the hazards.

The Dapol replica includes highly detailed body moulding, profiled wheels, NEM pockets with self‑centering couplings and an accurately applied livery. It is aimed at collectors of historic railway rolling stock.
