Manufacturer description

The BR Class 29 is a type of Bo-Bo diesel-electric locomotive designed for both freight and passenger use. Although outwardly similar to the Class 22, they actually share no mechanical parts and in fact were a modified Class 21 with a replacement Paxman engine with improvements to power output.

These modifications were carried out between 1963 and 1965 mainly at the Polmadie Traction & Rolling Stock Depot in Glasgow. After the rebuild, the locomotives returned to Scottish duties until their withdrawal in 1971. No Class 29 locomotives survive preservation. Dapol have managed to provide for the Class 21 also in the tooling and this will be made concurrently with the Class 29.

The first EP’s have arrived and are currently being evaluated by the design team and a series of corrective measures will be made to each of the models to ensure that they are as true to the prototype as possible.

Dapol’s Class 29 D6107 is a 00‑scale model of the British Rail Class 29 diesel‑electric locomotive, supplied in a pristine blue livery with the full yellow headcode box. The model is DCC‑sound equipped, with sound and DCC decoding pre‑installed, and runs on two‑rail track.

The locomotive is built to a Bo‑Bo wheel arrangement, measures 206 mm long over buffers, 34 mm wide and 49 mm high, and features all‑wheel drive with power pickup from every axle. It incorporates a 5‑pole SuperCreep motor with twin brass flywheels, metal‑sprung buffers, etched grilles, handrails and finely detailed cast wheels. Independent directional and cab lighting are provided, and an accessory bag supplies optional fitted components.

The prototype was originally built by the North British Locomotive Company between 1963 and 1967, with a total of 20 units produced for British Rail. Designed for mixed freight and passenger duties, the Class 29 was a rebuilt version of Class 21 fitted with a Paxman engine, operating mainly in Scotland until withdrawal in 1971; none were preserved.

This Dapol kit includes a manufacturer part number 4D‑014‑003S and is intended to represent the late‑crest period of British Railways. The model is aimed at collectors and railway modellers seeking a detailed, accurate representation of this short‑lived locomotive class.
