Manufacturer description

The BR Class 29 is a type of Bo-Bo diesel-electric locomotive designed for both freight and passenger use. Although outwardly similar to the Class 22, they actually share no mechanical parts and in fact were a modified Class 21 with a replacement Paxman engine with improvements to power output.

These modifications were carried out between 1963 and 1965 mainly at the Polmadie Traction & Rolling Stock Depot in Glasgow. After the rebuild, the locomotives returned to Scottish duties until their withdrawal in 1971. No Class 29 locomotives survive preservation. Dapol have managed to provide for the Class 21 also in the tooling and this will be made concurrently with the Class 29.

The first EP’s have arrived and are currently being evaluated by the design team and a series of corrective measures will be made to each of the models to ensure that they are as true to the prototype as possible.

Dapol’s Class 29 model (product code D6129) is a 4 mm scale (OO gauge) representation of the British Rail Class 29 diesel‑electric locomotive in the original BR blue livery. The model measures 206 mm in length, 34 mm in width and 49 mm in height, with a minimum curve radius of 2 inches, and is finished in a pristine condition. It is DCC ready with a 21‑pin socket, all‑wheel power pickup, and offers both directional and interior lighting. The locomotive is equipped with a 5‑pole super‑creep motor, twin brass flywheels, metal‑sprung buffers and cast wheels, and is coupled by NEM/tension‑lock couplings.

The prototype Class 29 was rebuilt from Class 21 between 1963 and 1965 at Polmadie Depot, Glasgow, and served on Scottish routes until withdrawal in 1971; none were preserved. Dapol’s version includes etched grilles, separately fitted handrails, finely printed logos and numbers, and an accessory bag with optional fitted components.

The model is supplied with a pristine finish and conforms to the era represented as British Rail blue (pre‑TOPS) for the period 1967–1971. It is suitable for use on 12 V DC track or with DCC systems.
