Prototype Era
Era 8 (1983 to 1994) British Rail Sectorisation
The British Rail Class 155 diesel multiple unit (DMU) was introduced in 1987–1988. Built by Leyland at Workington, 42 two-car units were produced using construction methods from the bus-building industry. Shortly after entering service, structural faults, including body cracks, led to the fleet being temporarily withdrawn. Rather than restoring them as two-car sets, British Rail split 35 units into single vehicles, creating the Class 153 between 1991 and 1992. These single-car units were suited to rural and lightly used routes. Just seven units were retained by West Yorkshire PTE and remain in service with Northern. Although short-lived in original form, the Class 155 remains an interesting part of British railway history.

Accurascale Class 155 – Provincial – 155324 is an OO‑scale model of the British Rail Class 155 diesel multiple unit. The real Class 155 DMU was introduced in 1987–1988 and built by Leyland at Workington, with 42 two‑car sets produced using bus‑building techniques. Early service was hampered by structural faults such as body cracks, leading to a temporary withdrawal. Between 1991 and 1992 the fleet was re‑configured into single‑car units, forming the Class 153 for use on rural and lightly used routes. Although the original two‑car formation was short‑lived, the Class 155 remains a notable part of recent British railway history.
