Manufacturer description

500 Edward Thompson entered traffic on 24 May 1946 at Gateshead, before changing sheds three times in the next four months. Eventually settling at Kings Cross from 12 September 1946, at nationalisation Edward Thompson was given the temporary British Railways number of E500, before being renumbered as 60500 on 7 October 1949.

As top line duties dwindled, 60500 Edward Thompson was moved to Peterborough's New England shed on 4 June 1950, where the locomotive remained until withdrawal on 16 June 1963.

Hornby LNER Thompson Class A2/3 model, representing locomotive number 500 “Edward Thompson”, is painted in Apple/Doncaster Green with silver lining. It is a 4‑6‑2 steam locomotive in OO gauge, finished in paint, with a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor and power pickup from all wheels. The model includes a DCC‑ready 8‑pin socket, NEM/Tension‑lock couplings, and a minimum curve radius of the second radius (438 mm). Its length is 295 mm and it carries the manufacturer part number R3832. The model depicts the period of the Big Four railway companies.

The real locomotive 500 Edward Thompson entered service on 24 May 1946 at Gateshead, later moving to Kings Cross on 12 September 1946. After nationalisation it briefly carried the British Railways number E500 before being renumbered 60500 on 7 October 1949. As top‑line duties declined, 60500 was allocated to Peterborough’s New England shed on 4 June 1950, where it remained until withdrawal on 16 June 1963. The class was designed by Edward Thompson and built at Doncaster Works in 1946, with fifteen units produced.
