A growth in demand in the heavy haulage sector led to a review of BRâs available motive power in the 1980s.Â
With 185 locomotives of the Type 5, 3,000+ horsepower category available, made up of its Classes 56 and 58, it was clear that more would be needed, and BR put out an invitation to tender for new locomotives in 1987. The 100 locomotive order was awarded to Brush in Loughborough, and these entered service between 1989 and 1993. No.60038 was named âBidean nam Bianâ after the Scottish âMunroâ in Glen Coe.Â
With BRâs trainload freight business broken up into shadow franchises, the locomotive became part of Loadhaul, based in the north-east. By 1996, this had become part of EWS and 60038 was named 'Avesta Polarit' after the steel making company, at the DFDS Immingham sea terminal on 19th March 2002. It is now one of 14 owned by DC Rail and currently in store.Â
Our RailRoad model is an accurate replica of this Class 60 locomotive, with high detail and design features for enhanced durability.

Hornby RailRoad EWS â Class 60 âAvesta Polaritâ 60038 is a model kit replicating the British Rail ClassâŻ60 locomotive numbered 60038. The kit carries the Hornby part number R30535 and represents the locomotive during the period of British Railâs rebuilding of its freight network in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The real locomotive was built as part of a 100âunit order placed by British Rail in 1987 to address a shortage of heavyâhaul motive power. Delivered between 1989 and 1993, the unit was originally named âBidean nam Bianâ. Following the privatisation of BRâs freight operations it passed to Loadhaul and then to EWS, where it received the name âAvesta Polaritâ at the DFDS Immingham sea terminal on 19 March 2002. The locomotive is now one of fourteen owned by DC Rail and is currently stored.
The model is designed from original drawings and includes a high level of detail for durability. It is compatible with HM7000â21 pin decoders, offers space for an R7408 enhanced bass speaker, features working directional lights, allâwheel electrical pickup, NEM couplings, brass axle bearings and separately fitted handrails, horns and exhaust.
