Prototype Eras
Era 9 (1995 to 2004) Initial Privatisation
Era 10 (2005 to 2015) Rebuilding of the Railways
The Class 90 is a type of locomotive designed for mixed traffic work on the 25kV AC overhead network as replacements for aging electrics such as the Classes 81, 82, 83, 84 and 85 that dated back to the 1960s.Â
Between 1987 and 1990, 50 examples were built at BREL Crewe and put into traffic on the West Coast Main Line during the latter years of British Rail and were equally at home on freight and passenger traffic. Following privatisation of BR, the type served with various operators, such as Abellio Greater Anglia, Virgin Trains West Coast, GNER, and freight operators Freightliner and EWS.Â
This RailRoad locomotive model of 90020 is depicted during its time as part of the EWS fleet when named âCollingwoodâ. Sporting a striking red and yellow livery, this model is DCC sound fitted, for an extra authentic touch. The original locomotive is currently in short-term storage for potential further use by DB Cargo.

Hornby RailRoad EWS â ClassâŻ90 â âCollingwoodâŻ90020â (DCC sound fitted) is a 00âscale model of a British electric locomotive. The product carries the manufacturer part number R30528TXS and represents the locomotive as it appeared during the initial privatisation period.
The real ClassâŻ90 locomotives were built between 1987 and 1990 at BREL Crewe, with fifty units produced for mixedâtraffic duties on the 25âŻkV AC overhead network. They were introduced to replace ageing electrics such as ClassesâŻ81â85 and operated on the West Coast Main Line under British Rail before serving a range of postâprivatisation operators, including Abellio Greater Anglia, Virgin Trains West Coast, GNER, Freightliner and EWS.
This Hornby model depicts engineâŻ90020 while in EWS service, bearing the name âCollingwoodâ and a red and yellow livery. It is fitted with Digital Command Control (DCC) sound for added realism. The actual locomotive is currently in shortâterm storage pending possible further use by DB Cargo.
