Prototype Eras
Era 9 (1995 to 2004) Initial Privatisation
Era 10 (2005 to 2015) Rebuilding of the Railways
The Class 90 is a type of locomotive designed for mixed traffic work on the 25kV AC overhead network as replacements for aging electrics such as the Classes 81, 82, 83, 84 and 85 that dated back to the 1960s.
Between 1987 and 1990, 50 examples were built at BREL Crewe and put into traffic on the West Coast Main Line during the latter years of British Rail and were equally at home on freight as they were on passenger traffic. Following privatisation of BR, the type served with various operators, such as Abellio Greater Anglia, Virgin Trains West Coast, GNER, and freight operators Freightliner and EWS.
This RailRoad locomotive model of 90020 is depicted during its time as part of the EWS fleet when named ‘Collingwood’, in a striking red and yellow livery. The original locomotive is currently in short-term storage for potential further use by DB Cargo.

Hornby RailRoad model of EWS Class 90 locomotive number 90020, named ‘Collingwood’, bearing manufacturer part number R30528. The model represents the locomotive during the initial privatisation era.
The real Class 90 is a mixed‑traffic electric locomotive built for the 25 kV AC overhead system as a replacement for the 1960s Classes 81‑85. Between 1987 and 1990, fifty units were produced at BREL Crewe and entered service on the West Coast Main Line, serving both passenger and freight duties. After British Rail’s privatisation the class operated with companies such as Abellio Greater Anglia, Virgin Trains West Coast, GNER, Freightliner and EWS.
This Hornby model shows the locomotive in the striking red and yellow EWS livery worn when it carried the name ‘Collingbird’. The actual locomotive is currently in short‑term storage pending possible further use by DB Cargo.
