History

One of 30 ‘Merchant Navy’ Class ‘Pacifics’ built at the SR’s Eastleigh Works between 1941 and 1949, ‘French Line CTG’ emerged in June 1945 in malachite green livery as No. 21C19. The class was given names of merchant shipping companies associated with Southampton Docks, of which CTG – Compagnie GĂ©nĂ©rale Transatlantique – was one, though it was widely known simply as ‘French Line’.

The locomotive became BR No. 35019 in 1948 and was fitted with the new style wedge-shape cab and turned out in express passenger blue. It was rebuilt in May 1959, this time in BR lined green livery, which it wore until withdrawal from Weymouth shed in September 1965.

Hornby Dublo (BR) model of Merchant Navy locomotive No 35019 “French Line CGT” in British Railways early crest express blue livery. The die‑cast OO‑scale model measures 360 mm in length, runs on a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor, and is equipped with a 21‑pin HM7000 decoder socket for DCC operation. It features metal sprung buffers, NEM couplings, brass main drive bearings, and separate die‑cast connecting rods, valve gear and a simulated coal load with a fully detailed tender bunker.

The locomotive includes an RF headboard, a highly detailed cab and backhead with instrument dials, and etched nameplates. Electrical pickups are provided on the main drive wheels and tender wheels, with a pogo‑pin wheel pickup arrangement for easy servicing. Minimum curve radius is a 2nd‑radius curve of 438 mm.

The model is supplied with an accessory bag and is compatible with HM7000 power banks. Hornby recommends pairing it with BR tavern cars for a period‑accurate consist.

The prototype was one of 30 Merchant Navy Pacifics built at Eastleigh Works between 1941 and 1949, entering service in June 1945 as No 21C19 in malachite green. It became BR No 35019 in 1948, received an express‑passenger blue livery, was rebuilt in May 1959 in lined green, and was withdrawn from Weymouth shed in September 1965.
