Manufacturer description

The Class 43 HST Power Cars have been a mainstay of the Hornby OO and TT:120 ranges for many years and we are delighted to announce this special commemorative train pack in OO Gauge, depicting 43128 and 43135 in ScotRail ‘InterCity 7’ livery, which are still in service as part of the last HST fleet in passenger operation in the UK.

Based on the refreshed tooling suite and featuring working directional and cab lights, working roof fans, 5-pole motor with twin flywheels in the motorised car, die-cast chassis and numerous separately fitted parts, this train pack is a must-have for collectors and fans of this classic British design.

History:

Introduced in 1975, the production HSTs revolutionised long-distance passenger travel in Britain. In total, 197 production power cars were built by BREL at Crewe, along with almost 850 Mk3 coaches built in Derby, to form 7-9 coach trains between two power cars.

Initially used on the GWR, they were also used in large numbers on the Midland Mainline, Cross Country and ECML InterCity services operating at speeds of up to 125mph. Incredibly long-lived, they were eventually deemed too expensive and outdated to operate on the majority of British mainlines, finally being replaced by modern units like the Hitachi IEP units in the 2020s.

The last remaining operator of HSTs is ScotRail, where short-form sets have operated its Inter7City services across Scotland since 2018. Power car 43128 and 43135 operated with GWR before they were refurbished and moved to Scotland where they now wear the distinctive ‘Seven Cities of Scotland Skyline’ livery.

Hornby ScotRail Class 43 HST Train Pack – Model R30464 represents the current era of the InterCity 7 ScotRail livery. The pack contains a motorised power car (43128) and an un‑motorised dummy car (43135) in OO gauge, both finished in the blue and grey semi‑gloss scheme with accurate colours, fonts and the Seven Cities of Scotland skyline.

The models feature die‑cast chassis, a 5‑pole motor with twin flywheels in the motorised car, and electrical pick‑ups on both bogies. Working directional and cab headlights, roof fans and pivoting NEM coupling sockets are included. The cars are DCC ready with a 21‑pin decoder socket compatible with Hornby HM7000, and have provision for HM7000‑21TXS sound decoders and HM7070 power banks. Separate parts such as cab handrails, underframe equipment and a short exhaust shroud are supplied for detailed assembly.

Introduced in 1975, the High Speed Train (HST) set a new standard for long‑distance passenger travel in Britain, operating at up to 125 mph on routes such as the Great Western Railway, Midland Mainline, CrossCountry and the East Coast Main Line. After decades of service the fleet was largely withdrawn in the 2020s, with ScotRail remaining the final operator, using short‑form sets on Inter7City services since 2018. The Hornby pack reproduces the last remaining HST power cars still in passenger operation in the UK.
