Built to replace the legendary Lancashire & Yorkshire 0-4-0ST 'Pugs', this class of 20 short wheelbase 0-4-0 diesel-hydraulic locomotives was based on a standard industrial design. Delivered to depots in the north west of England for shunting tightly-curved lines around docks and goods depots, many were sold into industry in the late 1960s and subsequently preserved to enjoy a third life at heritage railways.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

The Heljan Class 02 'SAM' is a model of a British Rail diesel locomotive. The model is based on the real-life machines built between 1960 and 1961, of which only 20 were produced. These 0-4-0 diesel-hydraulic locomotives were designed to operate on short wheelbase lines in the north west of England, often in tight curves at docks and goods depots.
The model features a weathered finish and is DCC ready, with a 18-pin socket. It has a highly detailed cab interior and underframe, and working lights. The model is designed for OO gauge and has a length of 88mm. The minimum recommended curve radius is 1 metre.
The Class 02 locomotives were originally built for British Rail and were later sold into industry and preserved for use on heritage railways. The model is a representation of one of these locomotives, with the running number ex-D2868 'SAM'.
