PROTOTYPE

The 4 plank wagon was built in the early 1900s by the GWR to determine which design would make the best general purpose open wagon. Two hundred wagons were built in total. However the design was not considered a success as the slightly later built 5 plank wagon, with its higher sides was found to be more versatile. As a consequence, this first batch was the only batch ever made.

Dapol 4 Plank GWR 46670 – Weathered is a scale model of a Great Western Railway open wagon, finished in a weathered grey livery. The model is supplied with NEM or tension‑lock couplings and is suitable for a minimum radius curve of Radius 1. Its manufacturer part number is 4F‑040‑030 and it represents the period of the Big Four railway companies – LNER, LMS, GWR and SR.

The original 4‑plank wagon was built by the GWR in the early 1900s as a prototype to test the most effective general‑purpose open wagon design. Two hundred units were produced, but the design was superseded by the later 5‑plank wagon, which offered higher sides and greater versatility, making the 4‑plank a single‑batch production.

The Dapol model is highly detailed, featuring profiled wheels, accurately applied GWR grey livery, a finely moulded body with a load, and self‑centring NEM couplings. It is presented with a weathered finish to enhance realism and would complement any collection of British railway rolling stock.
