Manufacturer description

Bulk grain hoppers were developed to transport imported grain. The first bulk grain hoppers were constructed of wood and open topped with the provision for a tarpaulin to keep the grain dry. However, as the imports of grain grew the design of the hoppers were developed and by nationalisation there was quite a range. BR standardised its bulk grain hoppers based on the all steel LMS design and these saw service right up to the 1970’s when road transport took over as the primary method of transportation and grain was transported in sacks on pallets.

Dapol Bulk Grain Hopper BR B885332 is a die‑cast model of a post‑nationalisation, all‑steel British Railways bulk grain hopper. It is built to OO gauge and finished in the standard BR grey livery. The model carries the Dapol part number 4F‑036‑035 and represents the British Railways Late Crest period, a design that remained in use until road transport largely replaced rail freight in the 1970s.

The hopper features a highly detailed body moulding and profiled wheels. It includes NEM pockets with self‑centering couplings for easy integration into a model railway layout. The livery is applied accurately and the finish is weathered to simulate the worn appearance of a working freight wagon.

The real‑world bulk grain hoppers were originally wooden and open‑topped, later standardised by BR on an all‑steel LMS design to handle increasing volumes of imported grain. Dapol’s model reflects this later, all‑steel version.
