Manufacturer description

Bulk grain hoppers were developed to transport imported grain. The first bulk grain hoppers were constructed of wood and open topped with the provision for a tarpaulin to keep the grain dry. However, as the imports of grain grew the design of the hoppers were developed and by nationalisation there was quite a range. BR standardised its bulk grain hoppers based on the all steel LMS design and these saw service right up to the 1970’s when road transport took over as the primary method of transportation and grain was transported in sacks on pallets.

Dapol Bulk Grain Hopper LMS 701358 is a OO gauge model representing a post‑nationalisation all‑steel bulk grain hopper in LMS bauxite livery. The model carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑036‑020 and is finished with a weathered appearance.

The prototype hoppers were originally built of wood with an open top and a tarpaulin to protect imported grain. As grain imports increased, the design evolved to all‑steel construction. By the time of nationalisation British Rail standardised the design on the LMS type, and these steel hoppers remained in service until the 1970s, when road transport and palletised sacks largely replaced them.

The Dapol replica includes highly detailed body moulding, profiled wheels, NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings, accurately applied LMS bauxite livery and a weathered finish. It is intended to depict the era of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).
