The 16 ton mineral wagon was a product of wartime when the requirement for coal soared and efforts were made to transport it more efficiently. Prior to wartime most coal was transported in wooden open wagons with a maximum loading of 12 tons. The all steel construction allowed a 33% increase in load and as a consequence these wagons proved extremely popular. After the war this popularity was sustained with the emergence of the new nationalised BR who based their standard coal shifter on this design.
In all over 300,000 were built from many different construction companies. As a consequence of the diversity of supply, there are many design differences, especially over the recommended all welded construction, where many factories could not cope and used rivets instead. The basic design of the wagon (after many repairs and a refurbishment and re-body program in the 1970s) continued into service until 1987.
MODELThese mineral wagons are highly detailed and will be a great addition to your rolling stock.

Steel Mineral Wagon - TCS 30th Anniversary - Limited Edition for 1E Promotionals
Dapol 16T Steel Mineral BR Grey M620240 is a 00 gauge model of the British Railways late‑crest 16 tonne steel mineral wagon. The product carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑030‑025 and is presented as a new release prototype.
The original wagons were introduced during the wartime period to meet the increased demand for coal transport. Prior to the war, coal was moved in wooden open wagons with a maximum load of 12 tons; the all‑steel construction of the 16T wagon allowed a 33 % increase in capacity. After the conflict the design was adopted by the newly nationalised British Railways and used as the standard coal shifter.
More than 300 000 wagons were built by a large number of construction firms across the United Kingdom between 01 January 1959 and 31 December 1960. Because of the diverse supply base, many examples feature design variations, particularly in the use of rivets where some factories could not produce the recommended all‑welded bodies. Following a refurbishment and re‑body programme in the 1970s, the basic design remained in service until 1987.
The Dapol model is highly detailed, featuring profiled wheels, a coal load, accurately applied British Railways grey livery, and a finely moulded body. It includes NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings and can be supplied with a range of running numbers.
