The 16 ton mineral wagon was a product of wartime when the requirement for coal soared and efforts were made to transport it more efficiently. Prior to wartime most coal was transported in wooden open wagons with a maximum loading of 12 tons. The all steel construction allowed a 33% increase in load and as a consequence these wagons proved extremely popular. After the war this popularity was sustained with the emergence of the new nationalised BR who based their standard coal shifter on this design.
In all over 300,000 were built from many different construction companies. As a consequence of the diversity of supply, there are many design differences, especially over the recommended all welded construction, where many factories could not cope and used rivets instead. The basic design of the wagon (after many repairs and a refurbishment and re-body program in the 1970s) continued into service until 1987.
MODELThese mineral wagons are highly detailed and will be a great addition to your rolling stock.

Steel Mineral Wagon - TCS 30th Anniversary - Limited Edition for 1E Promotionals
Dapol 16T Steel Mineral BR Bauxite M620650 – Weathered is an OO gauge model of a 16‑ton steel mineral wagon. The wagon was built in the period 1959‑1960 and carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑030‑024. It represents the British Railways Late Crest era and is supplied in a weathered finish.
The original full‑size wagons were introduced during wartime to replace wooden open wagons that could carry a maximum of 12 tons of coal. Their all‑steel construction permitted a 33 % increase in load capacity, and over 300 000 were produced by a large number of UK firms. Due to the variety of manufacturers, some wagons were built with riveted rather than welded bodies. Following extensive repairs and a refurbishment programme in the 1970s, the design remained in service until 1987.
The Dapol model is highly detailed, featuring profiled wheels, a coal load, accurately applied livery and fine body moulding. It includes NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings and is available with a range of running numbers. The model is intended as a realistic addition to British railway rolling stock collections.
