Note:
Dr Richard Beeching has always been blamed for the closure of many branch lines in the 1960s. However, as Chairman of British Railways at the time, he had been ordered to assess which lines were underperforming and publish his findings in the Beeching Report. It was the Minister for Transport Ernest Marples who gave the green light for the closure of much of the railway network during this time. So maybe we should rename them the Marples Cuts?
