44 of these powerful locomotives were built over a 15 year period from 1911-1926 and the last was withdrawn in 1960.
Designed by the Great Central Railway’s Chief Mechanical Engineer John G Robinson to tackle suburban trains operating from the company’s London terminus at Marylebone, they were originally designated Class 9N, however after grouping the LNER reclassified them A5.
The last-built locomotives, built after grouping, were assigned to north east England and under the LNER other members of the class were used more widely – on suburban services from King Cross, around Bradford and on the former London Transport lines between Aylesbury and Rickmansworth.
Following nationalisation those A5s still on Marylebone trains were transferred to Lincolnshire and on to Darlington and Hull. The last was withdrawn in November 1960.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Sonic Models has announced its first 4mm scale locomotive, a 4-6-2 tank locomotive representing the GCR/LNER Class A5 9N, designed by John G Robinson. The model is available in several liveries, including BR black with British Railways lettering, and will be offered in both original GCR and later LNER versions.
The model features a heavy die-cast chassis, flywheel, and Next18 DCC socket hidden in the cab. It also includes pre-fitted equipment such as a sugar cube, NEM coupling pockets, and sprung buffers. An accessory pack containing a coal shovel and rake, and dummy screw-link couplers, will be supplied with each model.
The Class A5 9N locomotives were built between 1911 and 1926, with a total of 44 units produced. They were originally designated Class 9N, but were reclassified as A5 after the grouping of the railways. The locomotives were used on suburban services in various parts of the country, including London, the north east of England, and Lincolnshire.
The models are expected to arrive in Summer 2022, following the completion of production. The locomotives were withdrawn from service in November 1960.
