Sonic Models has unveiled its first 4mm locomotive: the imposing and stylish Robinson GCR/LNER 9N/A5 4-6-2T.

Version: LNER in GCR Green with white lining and original cab. No.5167

The Sonic model will be offered in both original GCR and later LNER versions and features a heavy die-cast chassis, flywheel, Next18 DCC socket hidden in the cab, pre-fitted sugar cube, NEM coupling pockets, sprung buffers and all models will be supplied with an accessory pack including coal shovel and rake and dummy screw-link couplers.

Detail differences include GCR or LNER dome, whistle and smokebox, 3-rail or 5-rail coal bunker, single or split cab front window, cab-sides open or with windows and smooth or riveted sandbox wrapper.

Livery variations include GCR lined green, GCR lined green with L&NER lettering, LNER lined and unlined black and BR mixed traffic lined black with BRITISH RAILWAYS lettering, early emblem or late crest.BR mixed traffic lined black with early emblem

Production is well advanced. The models are expected to arrive in Summer 2022.

 

44 of these powerful locomotives were built over a 15 year period from 1911-1926 and the last was withdrawn in 1960.

Designed by the Great Central Railway’s Chief Mechanical Engineer John G Robinson to tackle suburban trains operating from the company’s London terminus at Marylebone, they were originally designated Class 9N, however after grouping the LNER reclassified them A5.

The last-built locomotives, built after grouping, were assigned to north east England and under the LNER other members of the class were used more widely – on suburban services from King Cross, around Bradford and on the former London Transport lines between Aylesbury and Rickmansworth.

Following nationalisation those A5s still on Marylebone trains were transferred to Lincolnshire and on to Darlington and Hull.  The last was withdrawn in November 1960.

Sonic Models has announced a new 4mm scale model of the Robinson 4-6-2 tank locomotive, specifically the Class A5 variant used by the Great Central Railway and later the London and North Eastern Railway.

The model, which will be available in various liveries, features a heavy die-cast chassis, flywheel, and Next18 DCC socket hidden in the cab. The locomotive will be supplied with a pre-fitted sugar cube, NEM coupling pockets, and sprung buffers, as well as an accessory pack including a coal shovel and rake and dummy screw-link couplers.

The model will be offered in a range of liveries, including GCR lined green, LNER lined and unlined black, and BR mixed traffic lined black with BRITISH RAILWAYS lettering, among others. Detail differences will include the dome, whistle, smokebox, coal bunker, and cab front window.

The Class A5 locomotives, originally designated 9N by the Great Central Railway, were designed by John G Robinson to tackle suburban trains operating from London's Marylebone terminus. The class was reclassified as A5 after the grouping of the railways, and a total of 44 locomotives were built between 1911 and 1926. The last locomotive was withdrawn in November 1960.

Production of the model is well advanced, with an expected arrival date of Summer 2022. The model is being produced by Rails of Sheffield and will be available in a limited edition.
