Era 7 (1972 to 1982) British Rail Blue (TOPS)
The 1955 British Railways modernisation plan recognised the fact that the UK rail system required a new high capacity tanker wagon to cater for the growing demand of petroleum products. Working with the Charles Roberts Railway Wagon Works and the Esso Petrol company a modern design capable of higher speeds was developed.
Subsequently a large number of users operated the same vehicles - with their use lasting into the 1990's on commercial traffic and longer in engineers use.

Oxford Class B Tank – Esso Unbranded Black (Revised Suspension) – Running number 47792
The wagon, identified by the manufacturer part number OR76TKB002, represents the British Rail Blue (Pre‑TOPS) period. It was conceived following the 1955 British Railways modernisation plan, which called for a high‑capacity tanker to meet increasing demand for petroleum products. Designed in collaboration with Charles Roberts Railway Wagon Works and the Esso Petroleum Company, the vehicle was built to operate at higher speeds than earlier tankers.
The Class B tank features NEM couplings and an exterior finished in Esso “Unbranded Black”. This particular unit incorporates a revised suspension system. A large number of the same design remained in commercial service into the 1990s and continued in engineering use beyond that date.
Key specifications: item number OR76TKB002; wagon type Class B Tank; livery Esso “Unbranded Black”; running number 47792.
