Manufacturer description

First introduced in 1998, the Class 66 revolutionised the rail freight sector in Britain and have become the most prolific type for heavy freight work.

In 2000, a new 66/6 sub-class was created with a lower gear ratio version enabling heavier trains to be hauled, albeit at slower speeds. A total of 25 were put into service by Freightliner, numbered 66601-625, and some of these have since moved overseas for use with Freightliner Poland.

Used mainly on oil, aggregate, and cement trains, 66601 is one of 22 still operating in the UK and, on 18th March 2025, was turned out at Eastleigh Works in a new green ‘Freightliner 60’ livery.

We've faithfully recreated this locomotive in RailRoad model form, keeping plenty of detail but incorporating more durable features, making it ideal for a busy model railway layout. Plus, this locomotive model has been pre-fitted with a DCC sound chip for the most authentic experience.

Hornby RailRoad presents a scale model of the Freightliner Class 66 locomotive, reference number 66601, supplied with a pre‑fitted DCC sound chip. The model carries the manufacturer part number R30531TXS and represents a locomotive from the current era.

The real Class 66 entered service in 1998 and reshaped British rail freight, becoming the most common heavy‑freight type. In 2000 a 66/6 sub‑class with a lower gear ratio was introduced, allowing heavier trains to be hauled at reduced speeds; Freightliner acquired 25 of these, numbered 66601‑625, some of which have since operated in Poland. The specific unit 66601, used for oil, aggregate and cement trains, remains one of 22 still working in the UK and was repainted in a new green “Freightliner 60” livery at Eastleigh Works on 18 March 2025.

The Hornby model retains a high level of external detail while incorporating sturdier components suitable for a busy layout, offering an accurate visual and audible representation of the locomotive.
