Manufacturer description

The Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway was a famous route that connected the English Channel at Bournemouth with Bristol Channel at Burnham and the Midlands via Bath.

It came under the joint ownership of the LSWR and Midland railways in 1875 and, subsequently, the SR and LMS at the Grouping in 1923. Through services ceased under the infamous ‘Beeching Axe’ on 7th March 1966. The line was known for its quirky mix of locomotive types, including Southern ‘Pacifics’ such as the two featured in this special anniversary pack.

Both models are offered in late BR livery, but in their original form which survived closure of the line by a further year. Add a 21-pin decoder (sold separately) to upgrade to HM7000 control. These models are exclusive to Hornby Club members only. Sign up today to purchase yours.

The Hornby BR Battle of Britain Class 34057 “Biggin Hill” and West Country Class 34006 “Bude” train pack replicates two Southern Pacific locomotives in their late British Railways early crest livery. The models are supplied with the part number R30483 and are intended for use with a 21‑pin decoder, which is sold separately, to enable HM7000 digital control.

Both locomotives are based on the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway, a historic line that linked the English Channel at Bournemouth with the Bristol Channel at Burnham and the Midlands via Bath. The route was jointly owned by the London and South Western Railway and the Midland Railway from 1875, and later by the Southern Railway and the London, Midland and Scottish Railway after the 1923 Grouping. Passenger services on the line were withdrawn on 7 March 1966 as part of the Beeching cuts.

The pack provides a detailed, to‑scale representation of the two engines as they appeared after the line’s closure, retaining the original late BR colour scheme. A separate 21‑pin decoder is required for operation with Hornby’s HM7000 digital command system.
