History

The prototype English Electric 3,000hp diesel electric, ‘Deltic’ emerged from Dick, Kerr & Co. Works in Preston in 1955, as a demonstrator. Fitted with two Napier Deltic engines, it appeared in a head-turning powder blue livery with cream nose whiskers below an American-style headlight cowling. Such was the locomotive’s success, British Railways ordered 22 production models for use on its East Coast Main Line express services.

The locomotive is presented in its distinctive powder‑blue livery as shown at the Locomotion museum in Shildon, with a grey chassis, steps and buffers, and the horns removed. It has a heavy die‑cast chassis and body, highly detailed cab interior, hand‑painted driver figures and etched window frames, and is supplied with decorative etchings including a Locomotion headboard.

The model is fitted with a large core‑less motor with dual flywheels, dual‑bogie drive and sprung metal buffers. It is DCC‑ready via a 21‑pin socket concealed beneath a magnetic roof cover and is compatible with the Hornby HM7000 app, offering directional head‑ and tail‑lighting, cab and engine‑bay illumination, optional Mars lights, roof‑fan speed control, and a flange‑squeal sensor that activates sound effects when fitted with a decoder. Additional accessories include extra lamps, a sugar‑cube speaker, space for an HM7000 Enhanced Bass speaker and a HM7070 power bank, and a display plinth with an etched presentation plate.
