The grampus wagon was the principal open wagon for the engineering departments of BR from the early 1950s to the early 1980s. The wagon design itself was extremely versatile with drop down sides and removable end planks. It was used for moving everything from engineering supplies to ballast and sleepers and even signal posts, which could be carried on overlapping wagons by removing the end planks.
Nearly 4800 wagons were built between 1951 and 1961 across several design variations and were used by all regions of BR. They were finally decommissioned to make way for sturdier all steel open wagons which could withstand better the heavy usage of the more modern civil engineering machinery.

Grampus Wagon Taunton Concrete DB986705
Dapol Grampus Wagon Taunton Concrete (DB986708) is an OO gauge model representing a British Rail Grampus open wagon in the Taunton Concrete livery. The model is built to the pre‑grouping period and carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑060‑017. It features a minimum radius of 1 chain, NEM tension‑lock couplings, a four‑wheel arrangement and a length over buffers of 100 mm, width of 33 mm and height of 27 mm.
The real Grampus wagon was the principal open wagon used by British Rail engineering departments from the early 1950s to the early 1980s. Its design incorporated drop‑down sides and removable end planks, allowing it to transport engineering supplies, ballast, sleepers and even signal posts. Nearly 4 800 units were constructed between 1951 and 1961 in several variants and were employed across all British Rail regions before being withdrawn in favour of more robust all‑steel open wagons.
The Dapol model reproduces these details with profiled wheels, accurately applied livery and NEM pockets fitted with self‑centred couplers. The body and chassis are finely moulded and available in two design variations, offering a highly detailed addition to a model railway collection.
