Prototype Era
Era 8 (1983 to 1994) British Rail Sectorisation
The grampus wagon was the principal open wagon for the engineering departments of BR from the early 1950s to the early 1980s. The wagon design itself was extremely versatile with drop down sides and removable end planks. It was used for moving everything from engineering supplies to ballast and sleepers and even signal posts, which could be carried on overlapping wagons by removing the end planks.
Nearly 4800 wagons were built between 1951 and 1961 across several design variations and were used by all regions of BR. They were finally decommissioned to make way for sturdier all steel open wagons which could withstand better the heavy usage of the more modern civil engineering machinery.

The Dapol Grampus BR DB990653 is a model of a British Rail wagon, specifically designed to represent the Grampus wagon. This wagon was a principal open wagon used by the engineering departments of British Rail from the early 1950s to the early 1980s.
The Grampus wagon was a versatile design, featuring drop-down sides and removable end planks. It was used to transport a variety of goods, including engineering supplies, ballast, sleepers, and even signal posts. Over 4,800 wagons of this design were built between 1951 and 1961, with several variations used across all regions of British Rail.
The model is part of the IKA Megafret range and features highly detailed design. Key features include profiled wheels, accurately applied livery, NEM pockets with self-centring couplers, and finely moulded body and chassis. Two design variations are included in the model range.
The Dapol Grampus BR DB990653 model measures 100mm in length, 33mm in width, and 27mm in height. It is designed to operate on curves with a minimum radius of 1.
