The telescopic hood wagon, designated KIA by the TOPS nomenclature system was built by Linke Hofmann Busch in Germany in 1979. One hundred and four were built and originally operated by VTG and then more recently by Tiphook. Their design with sliding roof and body sections ensured the efficient loading and transport of high grade sheet steel in rolls or coils which was subsequently delivered in perfect condition.
These wagons were often seen in rakes of more than 10 wagons.

The Dapol Telescopic Hood Wagon is a model of a KIA wagon, built by Linke Hoffmann Busch in Germany between 1979 and 1985. The model is available in Tiphook Blue Grey livery, with running number 589 9 072-6. It features highly detailed body moulding with a sliding roof and body sections, along with many separately added components and etched details. The model comes with steel coil loads and has accurately applied livery. It is DCC sound fitted and features NEM coupling with a tension lock.
The original KIA wagons were built for the transport of high-grade sheet steel in rolls or coils, and were designed with a telescopic hood to ensure efficient loading and unloading. They were operated by VTG and later by Tiphook, often in rakes of over 10 wagons. The model represents the period of initial privatisation, and is suitable for use on OO gauge model railways with a minimum radius curve of 2.
