The telescopic hood wagon, designated KIA by the TOPS nomenclature system was built by Linke Hofmann Busch in Germany in 1979. One hundred and four were built and originally operated by VTG and then more recently by Tiphook. Their design with sliding roof and body sections ensured the efficient loading and transport of high grade sheet steel in rolls or coils which was subsequently delivered in perfect condition.
These wagons were often seen in rakes of more than 10 wagons.

Dapol Telescopic Hood Wagon, model number 4F‑039‑010, is an OO gauge replica of a Tiphook Rail telescopic hood wagon, running number 589 9 057‑9. The kit is finished in pristine condition and carries the Tiphook Rail livery in blue‑grey.
The prototype was built by Linke‑Hofmann‑Busch in Germany between 1979 and 1985. Designated KIA under the TOPS system, 104 wagons were produced and were first operated by VTG before later being used by Tiphook. They were designed with a sliding roof and body sections to enable the efficient loading and transport of high‑grade sheet‑steel rolls or coils, often running in rakes of more than ten wagons.
The model measures 192 mm long, 33 mm wide and 48 mm high (over buffers). It features NEM couplings with tension‑lock pockets, profiled wheels, etched detail and separately added components, including steel‑coil loads and a sliding roof section. The wheel arrangement is reproduced as bogies.
The kit represents the initial privatisation period of British freight and is suitable for inclusion in OO gauge collections that aim to depict the late‑1970s to mid‑1980s era.
