Manufacturer description
PROTOTYPE

Box vans were the workhorses of the early freight industry, moving general merchandise and perishable goods and thousands were built over several designs and over a large time period.

The Southern Railway style box van had distinctive vents and a wrap over roof profile. It was built at Ashford during the years of the World War II and vans were sold to other rail operators such as GWR and LMS. The wagon continued into service into the 1960s under BR.

The Dapol Box Van SR 44625 is a 4‑wheel model representing a Southern Railway (SR) box van in the SR brown livery. It is supplied with the manufacturer part number 4F‑021‑017 and is intended to depict the era of the Big Four railway companies – LNER, LMS, GWR and SR – covering the period 1936–1938.

Historically, SR box vans featured distinctive vents and a wrap‑over roof profile and were constructed at Ashford during the Second World War. Although built for the Southern Railway, many of these vans were later sold to other operators such as the Great Western Railway and the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, and they remained in service under British Rail into the 1960s.

The model replicates the Southern Railway box van with a highly detailed moulded body and fine printed livery. It includes profiled wheels and NEM‑compatible pockets fitted with self‑centring couplings.

This prototype model is suitable for collectors and railway enthusiasts seeking an accurate representation of an early British freight van.
