Manufacturer description

Ventilated vans were the primary way of transporting perishable goods quickly and efficiently, yet maintaining goods in peak condition. All four pre-nationalised companies had their own design of ventilated van, but shared the same principals of design; a wooden body with ventilators allowing a constant flow and circulation of fresh air around the cargo. Dapol have modelled two varieties; the GWR type with its wooden planked ends and the LMS type with its steel corrugated end. Both these vans were in use right up to the 1960’s and several survive into preservation.

Dapol Ventilated Van BR B768117 Bauxite is an OO gauge model representing a British Railways early‑crest ventilated van. It carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑012‑029.

The model is liveried in BR bauxite and replicates the design used by the four pre‑nationalisation railway companies, featuring a wooden body with ventilators to allow continuous airflow. It is based on the types employed by the Great Western Railway, with wooden planked ends, and the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, with steel corrugated ends. These vans remained in service until the 1960s and several examples survive in preservation.

Key characteristics of the Dapol model include a finely moulded body, detailed livery and printed markings, profiled wheels, NEM pocket sockets and self‑centred couplings.
