Prototype Era
Era 7 (1972 to 1982) British Rail Blue (TOPS)
Exclusive to Rails of Sheffield and Locomotion Models.
The Bachmann Branchline Class 41 Diesel Locomotive depicts No. 41001, one of just two Prototype HSDT Power Cars which made up the Prototype High Speed Diesel Train (HSDT) and a locomotive that now forms part of the National Collection. Selected as the flagship model for their new ‘Railway Icons’ range, this museum-standard model has been commissioned by Locomotion Models, the official model shop of the National Railway Museum, and Rails of Sheffield. Using the same foundations as the award-winning Bachmann Branchline Class 47 and Class 37, this new model captures the distinctive shape and character of this 1970s icon to a tee. The technical specification for the model is as follows:

The Bachmann Branchline Class 41 model reproduces prototype power car No 41001, one of the two High Speed Diesel Train (HSDT) units built in the 1970s and now part of the National Collection. It is issued as a limited edition for Rails of Sheffield and Locomotion Models, and is presented as the flagship of the Railway Icons range.
The model features a five‑pole, twin‑shaft motor with two flywheels driving both bogies, metal bearings on each axle, a die‑cast chassis and gearboxes, and 16.5 mm OO‑gauge wheels to NEM 310/311 standards. It is compatible with second‑radius curves of 438 mm or larger and includes a tension‑lock coupling to NEM 362 standards.
All lighting is functional and switchable via DCC or analogue control, including headlights, marker and tail lights, cab illumination and guard’s compartment lighting, with authentic colours and temperatures. The unit is fitted with DCC sound using two quality speakers.
The livery reflects the locomotive’s current museum condition, applied with multiple paint layers, corporate British Rail colours, and authentic decals printed through multi‑stage tampo using period‑correct typefaces. Interior lighting is also provided.
