Prototype Eras
Era 9 (1995 to 2004) Initial Privatisation
Era 10 (2005 to 2015) Rebuilding of the Railways
Entering service in December 1984, 58023 was a typical mid-batch locomotive. Most reliability modifications had been undertaken, but not the more drastic changes seen on the second batch. Outshopped in Red Stripe livery, it worked for a couple of years before being displayed at the Welbeck Colliery open day on 25th June 1989 in ex-works Triple Grey livery with Coal Sector branding.
A locomotive that spent a good few years unnamed, it worked like this until it was repainted into full Mainline Aircraft Blue livery and named “Peterborough Depot”. It carried this name and livery until withdrawal in July 2001. It spent many years in storage at the back of Toton depot before being dispatched to Ron Hull's scrapyard. A last-minute deal saved the locomotive from the cutters, and it entered preservation under a private owner during 2016.
It has since been restored to full working order and, since late 2024, has attended diesel galas across the country. Since restoration, it has been renamed “Leicester Depot”, a nod to its current home base. This locomotive is truly the “Class 58 for a generation”; being the only locomotive of its class to work on these shores for over 20 years, many people's only experience of a working Class 58 is this one!
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

This model represents British Rail Class 58 number 58023, manufactured to part number ACC3496‑DCC. It is fitted with DCC sound equipment and carries the Mainline blue livery. The prototype locomotive entered service in December 1984, during the initial privatisation era, and the model reflects that period.
The prototype was built as a mid‑batch member, receiving standard reliability modifications but not the extensive alterations of the later batch. After initial service in Red Stripe livery, it appeared at the Welbeck Colliery open day on 25 June 1989 in a triple‑grey livery with Coal Sector branding. It was later repainted in full Mainline Aircraft Blue and named “Peterborough Depot”, a condition it retained until withdrawal in July 2001. Following years in storage at Toton depot, the locomotive was saved from scrappage and entered private preservation in 2016.
Since restoration to operational condition, the locomotive has been active on diesel galas nationwide from late 2024 and has been renamed “Leicester Depot”, reflecting its current base. It remains the only Class 58 to have worked on the British network for more than two decades, making it a representative example of the class for many enthusiasts.
