TMC announces NER Diagram V4 brake vans in OO

Published Tuesday 20 January 2026

The Model Centre (TMC) has commissioned an exclusive range of NER Diagram V4 brake vans in 4 mm:1 ft scale (OO gauge) to be manufactured by EFE Rail. The initial programme comprises eight individually numbered models.

This announcement initiates a broader TMC‑exclusive wagon range centred on the NER, with the Diagram V4 brake van chosen as the pioneer entry. The models are expected to be delivered in late 2026.

The range covers liveries from the North Eastern Railway, the London and North Eastern Railway, and early British Railways periods, enabling use across several operating eras.

Three NER‑liveried examples have been assigned to specific duties or locations, reflecting documented practice. One van is lettered for Tyne Dock mineral traffic to complement existing NER mineral wagons. Later models display both early and late LNER liveries, followed by BR grey examples representing the post‑nationalisation period.

Across the eight releases, the range includes:

This approach allows the modeller to reflect the incremental changes that occurred during construction and subsequent modification, providing variety within otherwise similar vehicle rakes.

The NER Diagram V4 brake van was introduced in 1908 and marked a significant evolution in British brake van design. It was the first NER brake van to feature a steel underframe, which improved strength and durability while enabling more standardised construction methods. The body remained largely wooden and included end verandas and side lookouts (duckets), giving the guard space for braking duties and overlooking the train.

The V4 became the NER’s standard goods brake van until the early 1920s. After the 1923 Grouping, the design underpinned later LNER brake vans, most notably Diagram 33 (Toad B), produced from 1924. Variants and derivatives of the type continued in service into the British Railways era, demonstrating the lasting influence of the original design principles.

All eight models in the Diagram V4 range are priced at £45.95 each.

Delivery is currently anticipated for late 2026.
