Hornby has added a BR livered model of its recently announced J52.
Representing the class in the early‑mid 1950s under British Railways ownership, this model utilises the Hornsey‑allocated (34B) 68873 in ex‑works condition. It builds on the legacy of the original Hornby J52 and delivers a superb mix of visual fidelity and mechanical accuracy.
Hornby first introduced a J52 in 1981, modelling the preserved No. 1247 (J13) in full GNR‑lined green. The early prototype ran on a 0‑6‑0 chassis with a simple, noisy motor and straight‑gear drive on the leading axle. The new iteration corrects those shortcomings with refined details and smoother operation.
The locomotive is finished in plain black, bearing the BR “cycling lion” crest that was applied in the 1950s. A five‑digit number is painted on each side of the enlarged bunker, and the engine incorporates later‑type safety valves and steam injectors, giving it a modern touch while staying true to its era.
The model retails at £174.99 and is ready to be ordered now.
