A lost painting by renowned railway artist Terence Cuneo is to be put on permanent display at the Museum of Making in Derby. The painting, titled 'DMU at Derby Carriage and Wagon Works', depicts a Class 108 at BR's Derby Works. It was rediscovered during a refurbishment and had been in storage for decades.
The painting was originally posed next to a Class 108 Diesel Multiple Unit at The Greatest Gathering, which took place in August. It is a significant work by Cuneo, who is regarded as one of the greatest railway artists of all time and was the official artist for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
The painting will be displayed at the Museum of Making, which is located within the Derby Silk Mill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's first modern factory. The museum is open from 10am to 5pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
The display is a tribute to Derby's proud railway heritage and the enduring legacy of British engineering. As Derby Litchurch Lane Managing Director Andy Butters noted, "Terence Cuneo's painting is a powerful reminder of our proud heritage and the ongoing contribution of our factory to train building."
