Royal Mail’s new stamp issue honours the locomotives and rolling stock that have defined generations of Hornby’s enthusiasts.
Royal Mail is launching a special collection of 12 stamps to celebrate 100 years of Hornby Model Railways, a brand that has helped shape British hobby culture for over a century.
Founded by Frank Hornby, whose first clockwork Hornby Series trains appeared in 1920, the company went on to transform the model railway landscape. By 1929 Hornby began producing models based on actual British locomotives, setting the stage for decades of innovation and nostalgia.
The new stamp set features eight First Class designs, each showcasing a photograph specially commissioned by Royal Mail. Together they trace Hornby’s evolution from tinplate beginnings to today’s highly detailed collector models.
Among the locomotives illustrated are the pioneering No.1 locomotive (1920), the elegant LMS Princess Elizabeth (1937), the BR 4‑MT tank (1954) and the AL1 electric locomotive (1963). Later milestones include the InterCity 125 High Speed Train (1977), the Merchant Navy class (2000), the Bournemouth Belle Pullman cars (2009), and the experimental LNER ‘Hush‑Hush’ locomotive (2021).
