Rapido 'Crystal Palace' Brake Van engineering samples

Published Saturday 30 August 2025

Rapido Trains UK has received the first Engineering Prototype (EP) samples of their OO gauge London & North Western Railway (LNWR) Diagram 17B brake vans, also known as the 'Crystal Palace' vans.

These vans were introduced in 1917 and were used as general-purpose 20ton brake vans. Over 540 were built between 1917 and 1924, earning their nickname due to their distinctive window arrangement.

Rapido Trains UK will be producing 14 different versions of the brake vans, reflecting the changes and alterations they underwent during their careers. Early versions will feature side doors and windows on the veranda ends, while later models will be open-ended with iron bars instead of doors.

Each van will be detailed with a guard's desk, stove, and pigeonholes inside, and externally will feature a separately fitted chimney, lamp irons, ogees, rails, running boards, and brake gear. The vans will be available in a range of liveries, including LNWR, LMS, BR, departmental, and private owner schemes.

The Crystal Palace brake vans are priced at £46.95 each and are expected to be delivered in 2026. For more information, visit the Rapido Trains UK website at www.rapidotrains.co.uk.
