Rails of Sheffield have secured an exclusive version of Rapido Trains UK's Caledonian Railway (CR) 'Single' 4-2-2 locomotive for the 'OO' gauge market. The model will be decorated in the locomotive's original dark CR lined blue, as it would have appeared in 1886.
The prototype locomotive was built for the International Exhibition of Industry, Science and Art in Edinburgh in 1886, and was used to haul inspection trains and Royal trains to Balmoral Castle. The model will be part of Rapido's 'What If' range, as their tooling suite does not cover the locomotive's original boiler.
Unique features of the exclusive model include an eight-point smokebox dart backer, later standard type buffers, and external pipework on the left-hand side of the tender. Models will be available in DCC Ready or DCC sound-fitted versions, with factory-fitted speakers and firebox flicker. The models will also feature sprung buffers, stay-alive capacitor, and separately fitted details.
The models will be priced at £249.95 (DCC Ready) and £364.95 (DCC sound-fitted), with a release date yet to be confirmed.
