Hornby has collaborated with Lumo, an open-access rail operator, to create a new model of the Hitachi 803 fully electric train. The model features two power cars, one of which is motorised, and three coaches, allowing model railway enthusiasts to replicate Lumo's five-car fleet.
The model is priced at £549.99 and includes the option to purchase the HM7000 Control System, which enables app-based control. The full-size fleet of 803s is made up of all-electric passenger trains built by Hitachi, which were introduced in 2021.
The real-life 803s are notable for using batteries to power onboard facilities, making them more environmentally friendly. They produce 25 times less carbon per kilometre than other forms of travel.
The model is a collector's item and a tribute to the 200-year history of the passenger railway in the UK.
Lumo's Managing Director, Martijn Gilbert, says that "It’s a privilege to be able to work alongside such an iconic British business and bring our services to life in a way that can be treasured and enjoyed for years to come. This comes as we celebrate 200 years of the passenger railway, and having a Lumo model introduced alongside trailblazing locomotives like Stephenson’s Rocket shows a perfect blend of tradition and innovation. The Lumo train is sure to be a stand out piece in any model railway collection."
