Announced at Model Rail Scotland on 27 March, the OO gauge model will be released in two variants: one through Rails of Sheffield and another exclusively for Hornby Club members.
Featuring a die‑cast chassis and running plate, five‑pole motor and a high level of detail, the model builds on the redesign of the Black Five released in 2024. Hornby has further refined the smoke generator and added weight to optimise run‑characteristics.
The 45407 depicted in mixed‑traffic livery is illustrated as the head of a Settle‑and‑Carlisle steam special from the 1990s – image from the Steven Draper Collection.
LMS Stanier Black Five No. 45407, The Lancashire Fusilier, stands as one of the most celebrated examples of Britain’s classic mixed‑traffic locomotive. Introduced in 1937, it belongs to the highly successful Black Five class, engines engineered to perform reliably across a broad spectrum of duties, from passenger services to general freight.
In preservation, 45407 continues to be a heartfelt embodiment of that everyday steam era, remaining a popular and authentic workday performer that recalls the steam engines that once ruled Britain’s rails.
