Heljan has announced a new ready‑to‑run OO gauge model of the LNER Sentinel‑Cammell steam railmotor, covering Diagram 96 and Diagram 97 variants, with delivery planned for the second quarter of 2027.
This launch represents Heljan’s first significant release under the Accurascale umbrella and introduces a prototype that has never been offered in this format before.
The models are the result of original research carried out with the assistance of LNER experts, aiming to capture the distinctive qualities of these early self‑propelled passenger vehicles.
After the introduction of the roll‑out, several liveries have been confirmed for the first production batch, comprising both historically accurate and alternative schemes.
Every model comes complete with destination boards that match its livery and intended operating area.
Key features and specifications include:
Diagram‑specific differences are also represented, such as top‑light vents on Diagram 96 sets and droplight windows on Diagram 97 models, along with regional variations.
The Sentinel‑Cammell steam railcars were launched by the LNER between 1925 and 1932 as an effort to cut operating costs and improve local passenger services. A total of 80 units were produced across 13 diagrams, with Diagrams 96 and 97 making up the largest groups.
Designed as lightweight alternatives to conventional steam‑hauls, the railcars proved effective at boosting passenger numbers on branch and suburban routes. They were widely deployed across the LNER network, including North London, East Anglia, the East Midlands, Cheshire, Scotland, Yorkshire and the North East.
A 1934 LNER report documented that the fleet ran up to 2.25 million miles a year, with some units operating for up to 17 hours daily. However, limited capacity, reliability issues and their lightweight construction led to withdrawal by 1948. One unit, No. 2136 Hope, survived briefly into the early British Railways period.
Delivery is scheduled for the second quarter of 2027.
