The NER E Class was a class of 120 tank locomotives built between 1886 and 1895. They were used for a variety of tasks, including freight and passenger work, and were known for their suitability for tight curves and weight restrictions. All 120 locomotives passed into LNER ownership in 1923 and were classified as J71s. By 1961, the final J71 had been withdrawn from service.
